About John

Veteran

My father, John Francis ‘Jack’ Harvey, was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army after graduating from college (1943) and finishing his first year of business school – he was too young to enlist before that.

Though his unit trained for landings in Europe, he didn’t get to go because he came down with pneumonia and was hospitalized. He told us that he deeply regretted not fighting in the European theater, but of course, we kids thought it was better this way. “What if you had been killed and we’d never been born?” we’d ask him.

Dad was from a small town in Missouri and he never lost his sense of wonder and gratitude for his experiences out in the wider world, first through the Boy Scouts, then Harvard University, then the Army.

I try to keep his spirit alive, and I’m grateful for this opportunity to honor him here.
