Major Ray E. Benson Jr. served 21 years active duty in the United States Air Force, including airfield operations at Da Nang Air Base in Vietnam from 1971-72, where he also worked with the Sacred Heart Orphanage. His awards included the Air Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart. After the Air Force, Ray’s work included airfield operations management at Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY, and at Homestead AFB, FL. Ray was a member of the American Association of Individual Investors, Military Officers Association of America, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served as the President of the Tar Heel Chapter of the Air Force Association. In Ashiya, Japan in the late 1950's, Ray met and married June Hines, an American teacher; their marriage lasted over 50 years, until his passing in 2011.
