General Brown was born in Champaign, Ill., in 1928. In November 1950, General Brown enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He received a direct commission as a second lieutenant in December 1953 and earned his pilot wings in December 1954. Over his 30-year career, he served in many positions as a pilot, commander, and senior staff officer, serving overseas several times, including one combat tour of more than 800 combat flight hours in Southeast Asia. He later served as the commander of the 22nd Bombardment Wing, March Air Force Base, Calif., and his final active-duty assignment was as the commander, Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., prior to retirement. In retirement, he resided in Riverside, CA, and was very active working with local officials and those in Washington to protect March Air Force Base (now March Air Reserve Base) from being closed during rounds of congressional cutbacks. With U.S. Vets, he pushed for a new facility for homeless veterans. He was the man perhaps most responsible for bringing the national cemetery to Riverside, CA, additionally working to bring the Medal of Honor memorial to Riverside National Cemetery in 1999, making it the first national cemetery west of the Mississippi with monuments. He passed away on November 10, 2016, and was interred with military honors, including a flyover at Riverside National Cemetery.
