In Honor of My Grandfather.
My grandfather was an extraordinary man whose life was defined by service, courage, and quiet strength. He served in the U.S. Army, and after returning home, he began a long and respected career as the Sheriff of our small community.
His commitment to protecting others came at a personal cost. He carried a limp from being shot in the line of duty in the hip while attempting to apprehend a robber at a local store. Even so, he continued to serve with steady resolve, never allowing his injury to diminish his dedication to the people he protected.
Outside of his role in law enforcement, he was a farmer who loved the land and the rhythm of rural life. He also had a lifelong fascination with trains and shared that joy with his grandchildren by constructing elaborate rail systems, turning simple moments into lasting memories filled with imagination and wonder.
One of my most vivid memories of him is from my childhood, when I suffered burns on my legs while playing in underbrush that was being burned in a field. He came for me, placed me in his sheriff’s car, and drove 20 miles to the nearest doctor with the siren blasting. In that moment, he was not only my grandfather and the sheriff — he was my rescuer and my hero.
He was my hero that day, and every day, for a life lived in service, protection, and love.
